Many people question the need for Christian home decor. Why do we decorate? Primarily there are two reasons to decorate. The number one reason to decorate is to make ones surroundings comfortable, stimulating, and inspiring. The second reason is to provide these same things for the ones that we invite into our home. It is our opportunity to influence not only those who live within the home but also those who visit the home.
As a decorator, everyone knows the importance of suiting the decor to the lifestyle and taste of the home owner. This includes colors, textures, furniture styles and arrangements, and yes, interests. If someone loves horses and horseback riding, there may be some rustic themes and items that display that interest. If someone loves the outdoors, there may be an attempt toward an open, airy feeling, etc. It only makes sense that a Christian might use Christian themes in one or all rooms of the home.
As with any home, one needs to take a look at the room that they are decorating. Thought should definitely be part of the decorating process. Using the prior example, one who loves horses would not fill their home with "all things horse". This would appear as clutter. One would put thought to the placement, amount, and importance, making sure that the interest is well served. Use of color and texture would be well thought out and utilized. The same goes for Christian decor. Too much appears as clutter. People should be able to "see" things that are important to you. For example, a Christian themed table figurine, one large wall hanging, and maybe a theme pillow would be great for a small sitting area. Get the picture?! Do not overdo. People cannot possible sort it all out.
Many things are available for Christians in many different types of stores from Christian stencils and wall paper to fountains and yard art. There are Christian themed materials for draperies or upholstery as well as china and glassware. In choosing which items one would like to use in their individual decorating, one must think of the accessibility, cost, and necessity.
These have been some small tips. Now use the creativity in you to make your surrounding everything you would like for them to be!
