Whitetail Deer Hunting

The better of understand the habit of whitetails the better chances you have of getting your buck. One of the habits is finding where he lives and when. You need to find his home range by find a shed antler.  This will tell you that this is where he has wintered.  Now the size of the shed will likely tell you how big the buck is.  The shed is a real valuable clue as t0 what kind of deer shed it.   The pedestal diameter indicates the deer's age.  As the deer ages his pedestals will grow larger each year until he is six or seven years old, if he's healthy.  The main beam of the antler will taper more rapidly and the main beam and tines will grow shorter as the buck ages.   This is one of the first steps in tracking a buck.   Mature bucks favor large areas to roam.  After you find where he has wintered now you need to find his roaming range.

You will need to find his trails that he uses every day.  By studying the direction of the buck's scrapes and rubs he will the you where he is coming from, which will be his bedding area and and where he is going depending on the time of the year.

These are some of the tips I can give you for hunting your trophy buck.  I have studied deer for over 40 years and been on no less than forty hunts in the Rocky Mountains in the wilderness areas above timberline (9000 feet and above).   Other hunting trips have included being flown into and drop-camped in Alaska's Brooks range where I was alone for a month hunting.  Being a person that has been a full time professional hunter for over 20 years, tracking and learning the behavior of these great creatures is my great passion.

Having hunted with some of America's most famous hunters, some would regard this author to be one himself.
