Visit the Philippines - Phrasebook

All Philippine languages and dialects belong to the Malayo-Polynesian family. The official language is Filipino (based on the North Philippine dialect Tagalog). Spoken by a quarter of the population as a first language, most Filipinos are able to understand and speak some form of Tagalog. In the Visayas and Mindanao, Bisaya is spoken (based on Cebuano) by almost all of the population.

The Philippines is the third-largest English speaking nation in the world, and English is widely spoken throughout the country since it is the medium of instruction in schools and is used on most road signs and documents. Spanish and Chinese are also spoken by small minorities.
