The Worth of Your Old Jewelry

by Danielle DeFrancesco of The International Jewelry Buying Group ()

In these dreary economic times, everyone is looking to make a few extra bucks.  A great way to do so is by emptying out your jewelry box.  Jewelry companies are looking for old, unwanted jewelry, and most will be willing to pay top dollar for necklaces, rings, and bracelets made from gold, silver, platinum, and other valuable materials. There is, however, one question that comes to mind for those who are interested in selling their old jewelry:  How much is it worth?  It is essential to get the full value for your jewels if you decide to sell your treasures.  Here are a few ways to find out how much you should be asking for: ·         Look for any clear defects.  Loose ends, faulty clasps, missing jewels, and rusting are all obvious signs that your jewelry will not bring in full value.·         Look for a signature.  If the piece is signed, it will make the appraisal process much easier.·         For homeowners and renters, contact your insurance agency.  Most homeowner's insurance companies have someone working for them that can evaluate your possessions.·         Visit an antique shop or a pawn shop.  Browse around and look for objects that are similar to yours.  If you find a like piece, check out the price tag.  This will give you a ballpark figure to work with.·         Open up a book.  As simple as it sounds, going to the library and searching through vintage jewelry books may be the best technique in appraising jewelry.  It is important to remember that the prices shown in books will usually refer to items that are in mint condition.  Books will give you the high end value of what you can get for your old jewelry.·         Take advantage of the World Wide Web.  Sites like eBay and Craigslist will give you a sense of what others are selling their jewelry for.  If you find an item that is similar to yours, than you will have a great frame of reference.  Vintage jewelry sites may also prove to be a good starting point. Remember that any piece of jewelry has worth.  Searching for an appraisal will help you understand the terminology and general facts that are associated with the jewelry business.  Whether it's a diamond ring, necklace, bracelet, or any other piece, make sure to know your options before you sell jewelry for cash.
