The changing economy it's effects on Art!

Everyone talks about it; what is it? The economic change we find ourselves in. Those of us who've been launching shows throughout the summer, as well as those of us attending these Artisan shows, have all been hit by the severe crunch.  From an artisan's point of view, I find myself going back to basics, with the elements at hand.  I'm enjoying my semi-precious stones again, as I fall in love with color and vibrancy all over again.

From the consumer's point of view, there are several good deals to be had in the jewelry market today.  It is true that gold is reaching astronomic proportions, but several buyers are beginning to reevaluate the beauty to be found in other metals, more readily available.  Silver is once again coming into the limelight as we realize the wonderful patina, and sheen to be found in several new pieces being complimented and offered in a variety of new creations.  Whether it's welded, pounded, twisted, woven or simply wrapped, silver definitely brings elegance and glamor to the forefront in jewelry.

Several artists are once again becoming fascinated with some of the stronger metals as well.  There's the defined look of copper, with it's warm hues, and ability to compliment so many different skin tones.  Copper screams summer, tropical dreams, and good times.  When you wrap it with coral, or jade, or turquoise, copper becomes mysterious and exotic.  Brass, and the changes it's undergone, is becoming the "new Gold".  There are several varities out now that don't tarnish or change in color and appearance, thus making this forgotten metal once more unique and valued.  Brass compliments so many colors and designs, that it's applications in art are once again becoming limitless.  Brass and topaz, especially a good, smoky topaz, catch and dazzle the eye, while malakite and brass wrap in a tantilizing tango of temptation.

When shopping this year, don't be thrown by our dwindling economy, go through your jewelry box, get out some of the ignored pieces that once captivated and intrigued your desire and imagination.  Get out the polish, the tarnex, and the polishing cloth.  Clean, examine, and re-evaluate these pieces.  Clasps can be fixed, chains can be repaired, and pieces can be complimented with somthing as small as a pair of earrings, a ring, or an outfit you haven't donned in a while.  Don't  be afraid to hit the craft shows.  There are several new concepts, created with you in mind, that are actually affordable!
