SAVING $ THROUGH WINDOWS

by JERRY CUNNINGHAM of CUNNINGHAM WINDOW COMPANY (9-Apr-2009)

Would you just go out in your front yard and toss out a dollar bill on your lawn and walk away? This might sound extravagant, but... what if  I told you that each year you were subconsciously going to every window in your home and literally taking out your wallet and throwing a $20.00 bill of old Andrew Jackson out on the ground underneath each window in your home and if the average home had only 15 windows in it, that would amount to $300.00 TO $400.00  over a year's time of your hard earned money.I know, you are probably saying, "No way!"  but in reality those old drafty windows in your home which have cracks around the windows and leaky glass and worn out weatherstripping is saying that in the form of higher utilty costs on an ongoing basis year after year.

We have client's who call after installing our new Cunningham Windows High Energy saving vinyl windows all the time who just rave about how quiet it is first, then it kicks in and they say if it is quieter, then that probably means not as much air is getting in through our new energy efficient windows right? DUH right Gomer, GOLLEE if this is true and it is, then our new High Energy efficient Vinyl windows will literally pay for themselves in energy savings in just a few short years as well as upgrading your home and making it a lot easier for you to clean your windows from inside the home.

Yes, you heard me right, almost pay for themselves, beautify your home and make your life easier. That is just a few of the benefits from having our energy efficient windows in your home. As a matter fo fact, let's talk about that some more in depth, It is no secret that old drafty windows are not only losing your hard earned money out right through the cracks but did you know if you have metal frame aluminum windows, this is gonna shock you to know that I have engineering data on window frames that say aluminum windows  lose over 1400 times as much heat and cooling loss right through the frames of the window, as a matter fo fact, if you have aluminum windows in the dead cold part of winter, when the temperature is below freezing say 30 degrees or less, just go touch one of those ice cold aluminum frames and you will get a pretty good feel for what cold is really all about. In fact take a piece of aluminum of any kind and just put it in your freezer for an hour and get it out and see what you have, that is the same as if your window frames made of aluminum are experiencing through the heat loss in your home.

There is a manual called a J Manual for estimating heat loss in the Heating and Air Conditioning business, and that J Manual is the standard for calculating heat loss throughout the HVAC (Heat, Ventilation & Air Conditioning ) business that says a single pane of glass loses 110 BTU (British Thermal Unit) of heat per square foot per hour, on that premise, an ordinary average window in your home is literally today a 36 x 60 inch size if it goes up and down and that is roughly 15 square feet of window frame in the hole in the wall. If that window frame is a single pane (One layer) of glass in an aluminum frame that means each window this size is losing 110 BTU per Square Foot per hour X 15 Square Feet per window that calculates to over 1650 BTU per window and if your home had 15 windows that would be approximately 25,000 BTU in heat loss just through your window frames alone, and that does not even take into consideration the frames being metal or any cracks around the windows, that is just the amount of heat loss in the winter time when it is below freezing (approximately). Now calculate that and multiply it by 24 for each hour in the day and you have a whopping almost 600,000 BTU of heat loss just through the window frames alone WOW! that could calculate to a lot of $$$$$$$ out of your wallet.
