Resources for Biblical Hermeneutics

by Timothy Carter of Solution Ministries (6/2/2009)

As a Ministry Consultant I am always on the lookout for fresh new ideas, innovative approaches, and helpful books for ministers.  I have put together a short Annotated Bibliography for ministers who are interested in enhancing their skills in Biblical Hermeneutics.  An annotated bibliography is a bibliography that gives a summary of the research that  has been done. It is still an alphabetical list of research sources.  In addition to bibliographic data, an annotated bibliography provides a brief summary or annotation.  I have provided the International Standard Book Number (ISBN) of my copy.  Good money saving idea:  When you get ready to make your purchase I recommend that you search for updated and reprints because usually the price will be lower after book has been on the market a while.

Annotated Bibliography Biblical Hermeneutics

Archer, Kenneth J. A Pentecostal Hermeneutic for the Twenty-First Century: Spirit, Scripture and Community: JPT 28, New York and London: T&T Clark  International, 2004.  ISBN: 0-567-08367-7.

This is a fantastic book.  Dr. Kenneth Archer was one of my professors when I was in Seminary.  He is a fantastic speaker, great theologian, and a pleaser to know.  This book has been revised from his dissertation titled, Forging a New Path: A Contemporary Pentecostal Hermeneutical Strategy for the 21st Century, undertaken at the University of St Andrews, Scotland and success-Journal of Pentecostal Theology Supplemental series.  This book has been a help to inspire and enlighten persons from all walks of the Christian faith.

Gorman, Michael, J. Elements of Biblical Exegesis: A Basic Guide for Students and Ministers.  Peabody, Massachusetts: 2001.  ISBN: 978-1-56563-485-5.

This is an excellent starting text on learning proper exegesis of Scripter.  It is well-versed in current hermeneutical concerns.  Don’t worry it is well written.  This is not a difficult read which will confuse the average reader with deep concepts.  Dr. Gorman will lead you into a thorough understanding and practice of the exegesis process.  It uses priceless summaries, visual aids, insightful reviews of current hermeneutical resources and a most helpful sample for a proper exegetical paper.

Tate, W. Randolph. Biblical Interpretation: An Integrated Approach. Peabody, Massachusetts: Hendrickson Publishers, 1997 (Revised Edition). ISBN: 1-56563-252-4.

This book integrates three contextual worlds (where meaning may be located) in the exegetical process.  Masteringthis skill will open our minds and hearts to hear what the Word is truly saying.  Thses three worlds are 1) behind the written text (historical studies) 2) the world of the text (literary studies) and 3) the world in front of the text (reader response/existential readings).  Gorman and Tate will thoroughly introduce you to the concerns of hermeneutics and Archer will address issues pertaining to the Pentecostal communities.   The purchase of these books will be well worth your investment, if you study and follow the instructions lay out there in.
