"MMA" The New Wave of Fitness

by Winston Ingram of The Briar Patch (2-Apr-2010)

There are a million ways to get fit. Most everyone has tried the latest fitness fad at some point. The vibrating belt has come and gone in various fashions, electrodes used to tighten and tone (with no effort at all) has intrigued us all. There have been pills, drinks, gizmos, and gadgets that have all promised to make you leaner, stronger, firmer, and healthier. The simple ugly truth is you have to exercise! There is no miraculous video, apparatus, or ingestible item that will magically transform you from a lazy out of shape couch potato into the sexy fitness model from the latest Bow Flex commercial. Sorry to burst your bubble but, those models looked like that good when they were hired to do the commercial.

The key to getting that toned body and youthful feel is to find an exercise you enjoy and STICK TO IT! MMA or, Mixed Martial Arts has become one of the most popular sports around.  Men and women of all ages have grown fascinated by the UFC series and pay per views. Couture, Lesnar, Hughes, and Penn have become the modern day Frazier, Ali, Duran, and Foreman. I’m sure many of you right now are saying “what the….you left out Silva and Gracie” or some other great fighter or maybe, you don’t know any of the names mentioned. You may not know the names but, at some point you have all seen the bloody, brawling, high energy cage fighters go at each other using techniques from Jiu Jitsu to Judo, Karate to Kickboxing, and Muay Thai to ….well you get the point. MMA includes a multitude of styles that require a lot of hard work and sweat to master.

By joining the right MMA School or Gym you open yourself up to a whole new world of fitness. Most people get bored with the routine gyms and stop going before the first month of their membership is ends. A good MMA Gym, such as The Briar Patch in Hattiesburg, MS, will offer many alternative fitness regimens that will allow you to achieve the goals you want to reach. Not only will you benefit from the excellent cardio and strength training, you will be learning an exciting and practical skill, which has most likely been around for hundreds of years.

The popularity of MMA Gyms is growing every day. You don’t have to get in a steel cage with a raging lunatic ready to put you to sleep with an “Anaconda Choke” or have you “Tap Out” from the pain of a well placed “Arm Bar”. You can however safely, learn a fun and exciting way to get in shape while developing a valuable disciplined skill that will stay with you for the rest of your life.
