Picking out a new dog

by heather adams of Von Smada Kennels (4/8/2009)

As I search online for a new pet, as I am sure all of us have done, sometimes I am so overwhelmed.  I have to ask myself these questions: first of all, how much time do I have for a pet, and do I have enough money to take care of one?

If I answer yes to both, then I have to figure out a few other things:

  • Do I want something big,
  • Do I have the room for something big?
  • How much time am I willing to spend with the upkeep of, say, a long-haired dog?

I have looked into grooming costs, as well as vet costs and food and everything else that goes along with it.  I am an animal lover, so somehow I am always able to find room for one more.

I often take in other people's pets after they find out the animal is more than what they bargained for, like the breed is too difficult to handle, too big, or some other consideration that should have been thought out before a pet is picked out.

Research, research, and more research is the best advice I can give to someone picking out a dog or any kind of pet. Ask questions, call different breeders and vets to ask specifics about different types of dogs.  There is nothing worse then getting a dog and then deciding it's not the one for you.  Then what do you do with the dog?

So again I say research, and ask questions. No question is stupid: after all, the answers to your questions make your decision possible.  That way what ever dog you bring home will be your life-long companion, protector, and friend.
