Integrating Faith and Academics: Developing a Strong Academic Christian Worldview

by Timothy Carter of Solution Ministries (2-Jun-2009)

This article is to let you know that I am passionate about Christian’s integrating their faith with their education.  For many students, even those strong in Christian faith, have a difficult transition from high school to college.  Sadly, many Christian students abandon their faith or at least its rituals as they become bombarded with the overwhelming influences that college provides.  All too often students who are struggling to hold to the faith and master the academics are losing both, faith is being challenged to the max as grades are sliding lower. I believe that we can unite our faith, our Christian faith, with our academics.  When we unite these we will have a strong Academic Christian worldview which supports our need for learning and our desire to praise Christ.  We can learn to focus on learning to think as a Christian student. We can offer our study as an act of worship to Christ.  Paul teaches us the importance of being careful with our thinking (2 Cor 10:4-5 4).  He also instructs us to renew our mind and be transformed (Rom 12:2).  The Word of God instructs us so many times to think, purify our thoughts, and even to study to prove ourselves to God so that we will not be ashamed (2 Tim 2:15).

We should take our academic disciplines seriously and make disciples of our students. We should train students how academics can unite with our spiritual life by giving our academic life in dedication to God.  Obtaining a good education is becoming more and more essential.  Finding a way to take a stand is also becoming more and more urgent.  By uniting our academics with our faith we can truly stand for Christ as well become educated Christians, bringing unity to the challenging curriculum of academics.
