How To Write an Effective Dating Profile

by William Greene of Social Hearts (12-Aug-2008)

For most of us, writing about yourself while trying to sound humble isn’t always an easy task. Here are some tips to help you express your best traits without sounding pompous.

1. Be Specific, not vague:

Instead of writing "I love football”, try this: “I am looking for someone special who shares my love for professional football. Nothing signifies the start of a football season like falling leaves and tailgating. There is nothing better than spending a Sunday afternoon cheering on my favorite football team.” Do you like football? If so, who is your favorite team?

Note** Add a few questions to make things interesting.

2. Share your interests

Listing your interests will immediately peak the interest of others. If you have a passion for collecting baseball cards or stamps, be sure to state this in your profile. You may also want to let people know why you love stamps and baseball cards. For example, perhaps you met a famous ball player who gave you his autograph when you were a child. This act of kindness may have gotten you started in collecting baseball cards. Finding someone who shares similar interest is a necessity for compatibility.

3. Always Smile When Writing Your Profile

It’s believed that you should always smile when speaking on the phone. Apply the same principle to your profile. Don’t write your profile if you are extremely tired, depressed or angry. Otherwise, it may transcend negatively on your profile and readers can pick up on your moods. Here is a little exercise: Try picking up any local paper and go to any column. Review the movie or food critiques. You can get an idea of whether a person likes or dislikes something by the tone of their writing. Simply stated, be positive when writing your profile!

4. Create an honest profile

Under no circumstances should you ever lie. Dishonesty is one of the leading reasons for relationship disasters. Avoid the temptation of exaggerating your salary, education, or anything else. All relationships should start on a clean slate and be built upon a foundation of trust.

5. Get started today!

There is no better time than the present. While waiting for others to respond to your profile, take the initiative and start responding to others. This will increase your chances of finding your special someone.
