How to Fly Fish

by Chris Folmer of Mountain Anglers (23-Feb-2009)

Fly fishing is considered a sport unlike any other to most.

You do not have to go out and buy the most expensive fly rod and reel to become a fly fisherman. Your main focus will be matching the weight of your line with the size of your fishing rod. Make sure you choose one that will match the type of fish you are looking to catch. You can also find the right hook size that will work for you. The high the number on the hook, the smaller that hook will be.

To catch a fish you must make the fly look alive on the water. This involves learning the art of casting and letting the fly play "dead mans" float on top of the water. Make sure you know what type of environment you are fishing in as some areas, fish can get jumpy if you enter the water so some times it is best to cast from the river bank.

After hooking a fish, you will need to make sure the line stays tight. If the fish won't come towards you, move the rod from side to side as you slowly and steadily reel.

With a little practice and patience, you can be a successful fly fisherman.
