Holiday Cards A Thing Of The Past

by Jacqueline Coote of Impressions by Jackie (11-Sep-2009)

Holidays sure have changed. They don't seem to have all that excitement anymore, at least not for grown ups. I myself look at the holidays now in the eyes of my grandsons. When I see their face on Christmas morning checking out all the goodies under the tree, it is such a wonderful feeling. I remember when I was a child, how the holidays were such huge celebrations. Families were decorating houses galore. My Mom stayed in the kitchen for two weeks, making all sorts of wonderful tasting goodies. Then there was the shopping and the wrapping. I could still see all the wrapping paper and ribbons fly across the room when the gifts were open Christmas morn. I remember a lot of it, but one thing I do remember is the list my mother had made to send Christmas cards to all the friends and relatives. What a list it was too. Heaven forbid you forgot to send someone a card. With each card that was sent out, there was always a little note at the bottom to friends or relatives telling them how the kids have grown, vacations we took, people we saw, etc. After the holiday was over, we use to keep the cards and cut out all the decorations on the front of each card and save them for the following year. We would punch holes through them and place brightly colored ribbon to place on next year's gifts as gift tags.............all that is gone now. Years have past and the excitement of the holidays has quieted some. Many of us work now, families have moved away. The tradition of writing holiday cards has somewhat dwindled too. Email has taken over. How unfortunate. Cards have become expensive and so has postage, but what's a stamp among relatives we hold dear and friends that have known us for years. It is such a warm expression to send a card for the holiday or for any time and what a wonderful feeling to get one in your mailbox. Hope you all enjoy your holidays - keep the lines of communication open to all you know and hold dear.   "Nothing Leaves An Impression Like A Lasting One"....
