Christmas Gifts: Giving to Your Boss and Others This Season

As the Christmas season winds into action, it's time again to start thinking about gifts. You may already have considered your family and close friends, but what about the other people in your life -- your boss, mailperson, and others who make a difference in your life? Here are some gift-giving ideas.

 For the Boss

It's probably not required, and your job may certainly not depend on it, but giving a gift to your boss can be a kind gesture. But, where is the line? How much money should you spend on the gift? If you get inexpensive, does it show that you don't care enough? If you get something expensive, will it just make things awkward? Not to fear. Most likely, your boss will be happy simply with the gesture and probably is not expecting anything at all.

Some suggest pooling with other coworkers to get one big gift for the boss. This shared responsibility takes away the pressure having to choose something all by yourself. Gift cards can be a great choice. That way, you don't have to agonize over what to buy, and your boss can choose exactly what he or she wants. If gift cards don't sound right to you, you might consider the tried-and-true gift basket. Full of goodies, these can be a thoughtful way to show your esteem. Italian food gift baskets or gift baskets full of sweets will be highly enjoyed by your boss and his or her family. You might try to figure out what your boss's tastes and preferences are and customize the basket accordingly.

For Your Mailperson

While many choose not to give anything to the person who braves rain, sleet, snow, and dogs, they may appreciate some gesture of appreciation for their labor. And what better time than the Christmas season? Some choose simply to leave a note of appreciation, or they might also include a small tip. Kristy Stevens-Young of Examiner.com mentioned several ideas, including warm gloves, an insulated cup, and whistle key rings, which can be very helpful for them while they are on the job.

Gifts for Parties

You may be getting together with some friends, coworkers or others this Christmas season for a dinner party. Gifts for these occasions do not need to be expensive, and can include a wine, baked items, and other inexpensive items. GiftingResources.com suggests elegant candles, soaps, plants, and chocolates.

Even if you don't give a gift to your boss, mailperson, or party host, expressing your appreciation and regard for the people who are part of your life can be a true way to share in the holiday spirit this year.
