There are different types of sterling silver, and an easy, safe way to clean them.
Before you begin to clean your sterling silver, it helps to know what type you have and how it's made.
Types of sterling silver
- Silver .925: This type of silver contains 925 parts silver to 75 parts copper- the copper makes the silver more strong and less flexible.
- Silver .950: This type of silver contains 950 parts silver to 50 parts copper. It is considered to be higher quality than .925 silver because of its higher pure silver content.
- Silver .999 OR 1000: This type of silver is close to 100% pure and is extremely malleable, making it very useful for woven pieces.
Cleaning silver products
- For products made of woven silver, simply heat up plain water and mix in a bit of clothing detergent. Place the jewelry in the warm water for about five minutes, then remove the piece and run clean warm over it to remove any remaining detergent. Let the piece sit out to dry.
- For other silver products with stone or glass applications, you may use a jewelry cleaning cloth, traditional silver polish, or even a bit of toothpaste applied to the jewelry with a very soft toothbrush. Then rinse off any polish or toothpaste with water, and dry the piece.
We hope these tips help you keep your precious silver products looking great!
