Arts and Music of Micronesia

by Koisimy Rudolph of Mahamaha Arts and Music (20-Oct-2008)

Carvings and weaving produce by Micronesian artists are very unique to their cultures and environment.   These products are dominantly produced by Kapingamarangi and Nukuoro weavers and carvers.    Some of these artifacts represent traditional forms passed on down by their ancestors.  These crafters also produce artwork that represent their modern artistic ideals and values.  For example, many carving and weaving forms such as fish or turtle are done to meet tourist demands that visit the islands.   Traditional artwork represent such forms like:  coconut crator, canoe paddle, or fisherman box.

Other art mediums include island music, pottery, painting, and drawing.

Artists are interested in capturing the events, styles, and mood of their own personal impression using their inherited skills from their ancestors and the knowledged gained through their modern education.  There is no doubt, each piece of artwork represent the authencity and aesthetics of each artisits' view of their tropical world, as they communicate their thoughts, feelings, and impressions through the medium of their choice.
