The Lettering of Monuments

     Many times people come up to me when I am working. They ask if they can watch. They say they have never seen a monument engraved before. For those who are curious I will try to explain the process.

The first thing I look at is the size and style of the letters. Then I coat the blank area to be lettered with a filler that fills the small pits in the granite. This is a contact type of filler that helps the vinyl stencile adhere to the stone.

I then cover the area with the stencil and transfer my letters and or numbers onto it. I cut out the lines with a sharp stencil knife. When I pull out the letters it leaves areas that are not protected by the vinyl stencil. These areas will be sandblasted with silica sand until they are the same depth as the surrounding letters. I use a special paint to match the existing letters.
